Patient Information:
Famvir is a prescription drug used in the treatment of herpes zoster, more popularly known as shingles helping to relieve painful and uncomfortable symptoms associated with recurrent episodes of herpes zoster and speeds healing of the sores. It is available as oral tablets and taken only by the doctor prescription.
Directions of using Famvir:
It is indicated to take Famvir within the first two days of
herpes
zoster (shingles) symptoms as burning, pain or blisters and within the
first 6 hours of recurrent episodes of genital herpes. Even if symptoms
begin to improve shortly after taking Famvir, it is important
not to
end the treatment in order to clear up the infection.
Usual dosage in adults need it in case of shingles is 500mg Famvir
every 8 hours for
one week time and in case of recurrent genital herpes episodes 250mg
Famvir twice a day for up to one year time. In case a dose is
missed,
it should be taken as soon as possible, unless the next dose is
scheduled within shortly. In this case the missed dose is skipped and
the next one taken as scheduled.
Contraindication to Famvir:
Special attention when taking Famvir should be paid by patients with associated health conditions especially with kidney deficiencies. Kidney disease medication may stimulate the appearance of Famvir side effects and therefore induce health problems. It is also important to provide the doctor with all necessary information on any other over the counter or prescription medication used while taking Famvir or shortly prior to Famvir treatment.
Famvir's Side Effects:
Famvir may feature more or less serious adverse reactions.
Reported
side effects caused by organism adjustment to the drug may include
headaches. If headaches persist, patients have to consult a doctor and
end treatment.
More serious symptoms are flushing, balance
disturbances, nausea, fatigue and general weakness and even vomiting.
These symptoms should alarm the patient and require immediate medical
help.
