Patient Information:
Aldara is a cream used in the treatment of perianal and
external warts
acting directly on the virus and not only on warts. Aldara has no
damaging effect on healthy skin and may be easily used at home.
Optimum results may be obtained within 4 weeks of treatment, even
though
recommended therapy may last up to 16 weeks. Aldara acts by modifying
the immune response and stimulating the body to fight the virus by
improving its own immune system.
Directions of using Aldara:
Aldara is destined to external use only. It is applied on each wart and gently massaged on until it gets absorbed. It is important to preserve all the hygienic norms while using Aldara. In other words, hands must be carefully washed before use, and the cream must be applied precisely on the damaged spots.
Aldara should be kept on warts for approximately 6 to 10
hours and then
rinsed off using water and mild soap. Therefore, it is advisable to
apply Aldara before bed time, after shower or bath. The
treatment
should be continued until all warts are completely gone.
Aldara dosage is indicated by the doctor depending on personal
health
profile. However, basic dosage includes once a day, 3 days a week
routine.
In addition, it is preferred to have one break between Aldara
treatment sessions.
Missing a dose of the cream implies taking it as soon as possible
and
then returning to indicated routine. Missing several doses may lead to
a decrease drug's efficiency.
While using Aldara is recomended not to cover the
warts with
various textile materials such as bandages or even cloth. Also, a small
amount of cream is recommended enough to cover each wart.
Contraindications to Aldara:
Aldara is contraindicated in individuals with a history of sensitivity reactions to any of its active ingredients. Discontinue its use if allergic reaction to any of its components is noted.
Aldara's Side effects:
Aldara may also induce certain mild adverse reactions. Most reportedly are swelling, redness and peeling off the affected area were associated with applying Aldara. There have been cases when itching, stinging and burning reactions occurred. Pain was reported in only few of the patients.These symptoms are considered body's adjustment to the medication. For severe and persistent side effects, medical help is urgently needed.
Clinical trials conducted on Aldara revealed that one half of tested patients experienced complete wart clearing most of them within 8 to 12 weeks. There have been patients obtaining satisfactory results within as short as 4 weeks of therapy, while others took 16 weeks to heal.
